01. Brief

As part of an emerging talent scheme, the BBC challenged small groups of creatives to provide a proof of concept of a platform or program that will bring the BBC's slate of programming to the real world. In the hopes of engaging younger app-users, the challenge was to develop a product that serves as a link between flow of data and the real world.

  • Identify the challenges and needs of the younger generation of BBC app users, from the ages of 16-24.
  • Use emerging technologies to bridge the gap between digital content and the real world.
  • Conceptualize an easy-to-use platform on which BBC's most popular content can be experienced in augmented reality.
  • Work with a team to create a proof of concept complete with a prototype, demonstrations, and branding strategy.
02. Design

An expansive proof of concept that is accessible, enticing, and most of all, fun to engage with. The characters were built with 3D modeling software, and Adobe Aero was used to form the augmented reality scenes.

  • Utilises augmented reality technology to bring characters from BBC's most popular programming to the street.
  • Interactive games and activities allow the user to work with the main characters of their favorite TV shows.
  • Digital reconstructions of popular characters as well as educational content that can be interacted with on various devices.
  • Engaging app design and logo, as well as advertising strategies that bring awareness to the product.
03. Design

The team worked together to bring the concept to life. An amitious project, Matthew 3D modeled popular BBC characters and built an augmented reality program, complete with game ideas, that allows the characters to be seen where the device's camera is pointed. A new logo and brand strategy was also created for the product.

  • 3D modeled characters from some of BBC's most popular TV shows that are able to be interacted with through the interface of the games.
  • Augmented reality that places the characters wherever the real-life user is standing with their device.
  • Games and puzzles that lead the user around the city or teach them about educational subjects.
  • Filmed demonstrations of how the product functions and how it can be used.
